Pesantren dari sudut paedagogis dikenal sebagai lembaga pendidikan agama Islam, lembaga yang terdapat di dalamnya proses belajar mengajar. Fungsi pesantren dengan demikian lebih banyak berbuat untuk mendidik santri. Sebagai lembaga pendidikan, maka pesantren adalah tempat yang tepat dalam menginternalisasikan nilai-nilai sufistik pada anak didiknya. Apalagi dalam sejarahnya, pesantren dan sufisme tidak dapat dipisahkan. Baik dalam bentuk nilai-nilai maupun dalam bentuk tariqat.
